I recently stayed at Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami, a peaceful hotel in Izu-Taga, a seaside area of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture.
This auberge combines fine French dining with private, free-flowing natural hot spring baths in the guest rooms.
What I loved most was the spacious room, the semi-open-air onsen overlooking the ocean, and, of course, the delicious French cuisine!
During my stay, I mostly saw couples and other adult guests, and I didn't notice any families with young children.
I think it's a wonderful choice for travelers looking for a peaceful, indulgent getaway with good food and a relaxing hot spring bath.
In this review, I'll take you inside my room, Lumière Twin 202, and share the private onsen, complimentary drinks, French dinner, and breakfast, along with practical tips for your stay.
What Is Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami?

Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami sits on a hillside in Shimotaga, Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. It's a small hotel where guests can enjoy French cuisine and natural hot springs.
An auberge is essentially a restaurant with guest accommodations, where dining is a central part of the experience.
Here, you can enjoy French cuisine featuring ingredients from Izu's mountains and sea, alongside natural, free-flowing onsen baths.
One of the biggest attractions is that every guest room has its own private hot spring bath!
You can bathe whenever you like without having to go to a shared bathing area.
Some rooms also offer ocean views, making it easy to relax and take in the scenery.
It's an especially appealing place if you'd rather unwind at the hotel than rush between sightseeing spots.

About a 7-Minute Walk from Nagahama Seaside Park — But Be Prepared for a Hill
After exploring Izu-Taga, I walked to the hotel from Nagahama Seaside Park.
The walk from Nagahama Seaside Park took me about seven minutes.
It isn't far, but the hotel is on higher ground, so the route involves an uphill climb.
I was pulling a suitcase, which made the climb a little more tiring than expected! (Laughs)
If you're an older traveler, have limited mobility, or are carrying heavy luggage, I'd recommend arriving by taxi or car.
After all, it's much nicer to arrive feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the hotel.
I've also written a separate article about walking around Izu-Taga and visiting Nagahama Seaside Park.

Izu-Taga from Atami: Seaside Walk, Soba & a Scenic Train
Just two train stops from Atami is a quiet seaside town called Izu-Taga. Unlike the busy area around Atami Station, Izu-Taga felt much calmer, with fewer tourists and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. This time, we travelled from Tokyo Station to Atami by Shinkansen, then spent the day in Izu-Taga enjoying a soba lunch and a peaceful walk by the sea. Along the way, we were also lucky enough to unexpectedly board the adorable sightseeing train known as the Kinme Train. We enjoyed a leisurely meal at a traditional soba restaurant, drank freshly brewed coffee by the sea and simply slowed ...

My Room: The Spacious 63 m² Lumière Twin 202

I stayed in Lumière Twin 202, on the second floor.
It's a 63 m² twin room with a private, free-flowing semi-open-air onsen bath.
| Room type | Lumière Twin 202 |
|---|---|
| Floor | 2nd floor |
| Size | 63 m² |
| Occupancy | 1–2 guests |
| Beds | Twin beds |
| Bath | Private, free-flowing semi-open-air onsen |
| View | Ocean-facing |
A Beautiful, Spacious Room Made for Relaxing

My first impression when I entered was just how spacious and lovely the room felt!
The decor was calm and understated, with a comfortable sofa and plenty of space to relax.
I could also see the ocean through the windows.
I loved sitting on the sofa, enjoying the view, and having a cup of coffee.
With a room like this, it's tempting to skip sightseeing and spend the entire day at the hotel! (Laughs)

The room has two separate beds.
At 63 m², there's plenty of space for two people to feel comfortable.
There was room to unpack without feeling cramped, and I could relax wherever I wanted.

There was also generous storage, including a wardrobe and drawers.
That made it easy to put my belongings away and keep the room tidy.
Relaxing in the Private, Free-Flowing Semi-Open-Air Onsen

One of the things I was most excited about was the private, free-flowing semi-open-air hot spring bath in my room.
The stone bathtub looks out toward the ocean through an open window area.
Having an onsen all to yourself means you can enjoy a soak whenever you like, without worrying about other guests.
Just the Right Water Temperature — I Wanted to Keep Coming Back!

When I got in, the water felt just right to me: neither too hot nor too cool!
Some hot springs are so hot that I can't stay in very long, but I found this one wonderfully comfortable.
I'd take a soak, go back into the room to relax for a while...
...and then get straight back into the bath! (Laughs)
That's the joy of having a private onsen in your room: you can enjoy it as often as you like.
Not having to walk to a communal bath is also a nice advantage for older travelers.
Beautiful Ocean Views from the Balcony

From the balcony, I could enjoy views of the ocean and surrounding hills.
I was lucky with the weather, and the bright blue sky and blue ocean looked absolutely beautiful!

There was also a seating area on the balcony, so I could sit outside and enjoy the sea view.
When you book a hotel with scenery like this, it's worth taking the time to simply slow down.
Just looking out at the ocean was so relaxing.

I even got to watch a beautiful sunrise.

Complimentary Drinks: Six Bottles of Water and Two Beers!

One of the little things that made me especially happy was the selection of complimentary drinks in the room.
There were six bottles of mineral water and two beers, all complimentary during my stay!
Many hotels provide just a couple of bottles of water, so finding six was a lovely surprise.
It's easy to get thirsty when you keep going back to your private onsen, so having plenty of water in the room was especially convenient.
I didn't have to head out to buy drinks and could simply enjoy relaxing at the hotel.
Note: Complimentary drink selections and quantities reflect my stay and may change.
Coffee, Tea, Jasmine Tea — Even Decaf!

The room also had a capsule coffee machine.
Along with regular coffee, there were options such as black tea, jasmine tea, and decaffeinated coffee.
I especially appreciated having a decaf option!
It's perfect for anyone who prefers to avoid caffeine in the evening.
After a hot spring bath, I'd make myself a drink and look out at the sea.
It's these small moments that make a relaxing hotel stay feel special.
Extra Towels Were Available for Repeat Onsen Baths

Another thoughtful touch was being able to request extra towels.
When you have a private hot spring bath, it's hard to resist using it again and again.
But reusing a damp towel every time isn't particularly appealing...

Here, I could request additional towels, making it easy to enjoy several comfortable soaks.
I really appreciated this kind of attentive service.
French Dinner Featuring Local Izu Ingredients

The French dinner was one of the things I'd been looking forward to most at Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami!
Since dining is such an important part of an auberge stay, I had high expectations.
The dishes were beautifully presented, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
Another highlight was the chance to try local and seasonal ingredients, including venison from Izu.
When traveling to Izu, it's always nice to taste something connected to the region.
Here are a few dishes that stood out to me.

My Favorite: Grilled Bonito Roulade

My favorite dish of the evening was the grilled bonito roulade.
It was served with roasted eggplant purée and gently cooked Kujo green onions.
In Japan, bonito is often eaten as sashimi or lightly seared tataki, so enjoying it prepared in a French style felt like a treat.
Of all the wonderful dishes, this was one of my absolute favorites!
I'd happily eat it again.
An Unusual and Delicious Ginkgo Nut Potage

Another memorable dish was the ginkgo nut potage made with seafood stock.
I usually associate ginkgo nuts with Japanese dishes such as chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), so seeing them in a creamy soup was a surprise!
It had a rich, mellow flavor and tasted absolutely delicious.
The accompanying autumn vegetables made it feel especially seasonal.
Discovering dishes I wouldn't normally get to try is one of my favorite parts of staying at an auberge.
Izu Venison: Surprisingly Tender and Light

We also enjoyed roasted venison from Izu, another regional ingredient.
If you haven't tried venison before, you might imagine it would be tough or have a strong gamey flavor.
But the meat I had was light, tender, and delicious!
I found it soft enough that many older diners could enjoy it comfortably, too.
Tough meat can be difficult to eat, but that wasn't a problem with this dish at all.
It was a lovely opportunity to experience a local Izu ingredient through French cuisine.
A Beautiful Multi-Course Dinner, Right Through Dessert

Along with bonito, ginkgo nuts, and venison, the course featured a variety of other seasonal ingredients.

Each plate was beautifully arranged, and I looked forward to seeing what would arrive next.

And of course, no French dinner feels complete without dessert!

Being able to take your time over every course, right through dessert, is part of what makes an auberge stay so enjoyable.
Note: Dinner menus vary by season and booking plan.
Is the French Dinner Too Filling? A Tip for Guests with Smaller Appetites

I enjoyed every dish and was happy to savor the entire dinner.
However, French multi-course meals often include rich sauces and creamy elements, so some guests may find the overall meal a little filling.
As I was eating, I caught myself thinking, "This might be a little too much food for Mama-rin, our editor-in-chief!" (Laughs)
If you're an older traveler, have a smaller appetite, or generally prefer lighter meals, it may be worth asking the hotel in advance whether smaller portions can be arranged.
After all, you want to enjoy every delicious course without feeling uncomfortably full.
Note: Please check with the hotel directly about whether portion adjustments are possible.
Breakfast: Choose from Around Six Sandwiches, with Lighter Options Too

The next morning, I enjoyed breakfast at the hotel's ocean-view restaurant.
The large windows framed the blue sea, making it a lovely place to start the day.
For the main breakfast dish, guests could choose from around six types of sandwiches during my stay.
There were also soup, an enzyme drink, and yogurt, giving breakfast a fresh, lighter feel.
I don't like avocado, so I asked to have it left out of my sandwich.
The staff were happy to accommodate my request, which I really appreciated!
If you have an ingredient preference or dietary requirement, it's best to ask the hotel ahead of time, as not all substitutions may be possible.
After a rich French dinner the previous evening, this gentler breakfast felt like a nice balance.
I took my time enjoying breakfast while looking out over the water.
It was such a peaceful and indulgent start to the morning.
Note: Breakfast selections and service details reflect my stay and may change.
Who Would Enjoy Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami?

Based on my experience, I'd particularly recommend this hotel to travelers who:
- Want a peaceful place to unwind
- Would love a private onsen they can use whenever they like
- Enjoy French cuisine and discovering local Izu ingredients
- Prefer a spacious, comfortable guest room
- Are planning a romantic getaway or a special trip as a couple
- Want a slower-paced trip away from busy tourist areas
I think it's ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy wonderful food, soak in a hot spring, and spend the rest of the time relaxing in their room.
It's the kind of hotel where staying in is the main event.

Final Thoughts: A Relaxing Getaway with Private Onsen and Excellent Food

My stay at Auberge Fontaine Bleau Atami was a lovely experience.
The spacious, beautifully maintained room, private semi-open-air onsen with an ocean view, and excellent French dinner all made it memorable.
What stood out most was the quality of the food and how comfortable it felt to spend time relaxing in the room.
The complimentary water and beer were thoughtful extras, and I found there was plenty to enjoy without leaving the hotel.
Exploring the lively parts of Atami is fun, but sometimes the best kind of vacation is a quiet escape: enjoy great food, soak in a hot spring, and do absolutely nothing for a while.
I'd recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful, food-focused getaway with a private onsen.

The surrounding Izu-Taga area also has a quiet beach and a charming soba restaurant, both of which I visited on this trip.
I've written a separate report about exploring Izu-Taga, so feel free to read that too.
