Delta Economy Review: Tokyo to Honolulu in Our 60s

2019年7月12日

Flying Delta to Hawaii

For this Hawaii trip in our 60s, we decided to fly with Delta Air Lines.

Our flight departed at 7:25 PM.

Before booking, I had read online reviews saying that Delta had good in-flight meals and even served Starbucks coffee, so that caught my attention.

This was my first time flying Delta, and here is what I thought.

2026 Update

This review is based on our Delta flight to Hawaii in 2019.

As of 2026, Delta still operates nonstop flights between Tokyo Haneda and Honolulu.

The cabin class that was called Main Cabin at the time of our trip is now branded as Delta Main.

On current long-haul international Delta Main flights, meals, sleep kits, pillows and blankets are still offered, and Starbucks® coffee is also available on eligible flights.

However, aircraft, seats, meals, amenities and entertainment may have changed since our 2019 trip.

This article focuses on our actual experience at the time, including seat comfort, food and onboard service.

At 158 cm, My Heels Did Not Reach the Floor

Delta economy seat amenities

At our seats, slippers, a blanket, an eye mask and earphones were provided, along with drink and food menus.

The cabin interior featured Delta’s light blue branding.

The thing that stood out most to me was the height of the seat.

At 158 cm tall, my heels did not fully reach the floor.

Because my feet were slightly off the ground, I started to feel discomfort around my hips after about two hours and found myself changing position quite often.

My husband, who is around 180 cm tall, had a completely different reaction.

He said the seat felt comfortable.

That made me realise just how much seat comfort can depend on your height.

Disney Movies and Plenty of Japanese Films

This was the entertainment screen at our seat.

I remember feeling that there was a good selection of Disney titles.

That seemed especially useful for families travelling with children.

When we flew in 2019, the Japanese movie selection included titles such as Every Day a Good Day, Recall, Shoplifters, One Cut of the Dead and Life in Overtime.

There were quite a few Japanese films too.

The touchscreen also worked smoothly and was easy to use.

In-flight entertainment titles vary depending on the flight and travel date.

Experienced Cabin Crew Made the Flight Feel Reassuring

Inside a Delta flight to Hawaii

On our flight, many of the cabin crew members appeared highly experienced.

Some seemed to be around my own generation, or possibly even older.

Watching them work confidently and energetically throughout a long-haul flight was genuinely encouraging for me as someone travelling in my 60s.

It gave the service a calm, reassuring feeling that was a little different from airlines where the cabin crew seem noticeably younger.

19 Drink Options on Our Flight, Including Alcohol

This was the meal menu on our flight.

I always like having a printed menu because it gives me time to decide what I want before the cabin crew comes around.

The drink selection was also very good.

At the time, there were 19 drink options including soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Having a menu made ordering easier too.

Without one, I tend to order the same drink every time.

As of 2026, Delta Main still includes complimentary beer, wine and spirits on most long-haul international flights.

Drink selections and onboard service may vary by route and travel date.

The In-Flight Meal Was Better Than I Expected

Delta in-flight meal

This was the meal I chose.

It included roasted pork marinated with garlic, ginger and soy sauce, along with okra, red bell pepper, pumpkin, eggplant and rice.

There was a nice balance of meat and vegetables, and I also liked the seasoning.

Dessert was chocolate.

The food on Delta was really good!

Of course, the menu today is different from what we ate in 2019, but as of 2026, meal service is still offered on most long-haul international Delta Main flights.

Breakfast with Starbucks Coffee — Better Than Hawaiian Airlines?

Delta breakfast meal

This was our breakfast meal.

It was light, but just the right amount for me.

The main item was a croissant sandwich, and I really liked the balance of cheese and bacon.

This is only my personal opinion, but I felt more satisfied with this light meal than with the one I had previously eaten on Hawaiian Airlines.

Starbucks coffee served on Delta

After breakfast came Starbucks coffee.

Starbucks coffee really is comforting.

It helped me feel more awake in the morning too.

And this was not only a feature of our 2019 flight.

As of 2026, Starbucks® coffee is still offered complimentary on eligible Delta flights.

That is a nice little bonus.

Overall, I was very happy with the food on this flight.

If good in-flight meals matter to you, our Delta flight was a very satisfying experience.

I would happily fly Delta again.

Our 2019 family trip to Hawaii was booked through Expedia.

At the time, the total cost for a 4-night, 6-day trip was ¥155,180 per person.

Please note that this was our 2019 travel price. Current airfare and hotel prices may be very different.
