Waikiki is beautiful.
Waikiki prices? Sometimes a little less beautiful.
With food prices in Hawaii feeling expensive,
it is always nice to find somewhere in the middle of Waikiki where you can eat without immediately worrying about the bill.
That is exactly why we were happy to find
Piko Kitchen + Bar.
During happy hour,
we found burgers and beer for just
$6 each.
Mamarin and I went to try it ourselves,
so here is our firsthand look at the food, portion sizes and how quickly the restaurant filled up.
And because dinner is obviously not enough(笑),
we also stopped by
ALOHA GREEK
for self-serve Greek yogurt ice cream afterward.
If you are looking for reasonably priced food and dessert in Waikiki,
this combination is worth knowing about.

Piko Kitchen Happy Hour: $6 Food and Drinks in Waikiki

When we visited,
Piko Kitchen offered happy hour every day from
2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
with selected beers, burgers and bao available for
$6 each.
French fries could be added for $5.
Apparently,
the happy hour items had previously been $5 and were later increased to $6.
Still...
$6 in the middle of Waikiki?
Considering the prices we were seeing elsewhere,
we were not complaining(笑)
Please note that happy hour prices, hours and menu items can change, so check the latest menu before visiting.
The Slightly Spicy Korean-Style Burger Was Perfect with Beer

We ordered a
Kalbi Burger
and a
Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich.
The burger had a slightly spicy,
Korean-inspired flavor.
The combination of meat and spicy sauce was exactly the kind of thing that makes you think,
“Okay... now I need a beer.”

The draft beer went very nicely with it.
And the hot french fries were good too.
One thing Mamarin appreciated was the portion size.
There were quite a few older customers in the restaurant,
and compared with some of the enormous American meals we encountered,
the burgers felt closer to the portion sizes we are used to in Japan.
For us,
that meant we could enjoy the meal without staring at a mountain of food and wondering how we were supposed to finish it(笑)
That can be a nice point for travelers in their 60s and 70s who prefer a more manageable meal.
While walking around Hawaii,
we also felt that there seemed to be more Korean food and Korean-inspired flavors than on some of our previous trips.
The bao served at Piko Kitchen is originally Chinese rather than Korean,
but seeing bao and Korean-style burgers on the same menu felt very Hawaii:
a mix of different food cultures all in one place.
Go Early — It Filled Up Fast!

We arrived at
exactly 2 p.m.
and walked straight in without waiting.
Perfect.
But by around 2:30 p.m.,
more and more customers started arriving.
Before long,
the restaurant was full.
So based on our visit,
early in the happy hour period was definitely the sweet spot.
If I were going again,
I would aim for shortly after 2 p.m.
There are several other restaurants around Waikiki with happy hour deals too,
so if you want to keep food costs under control,
happy hour is definitely worth watching for.

Waikiki Market Is Just Upstairs

Another convenient thing about this location is
Waikiki Market,
the supermarket upstairs.
If you are staying in Waikiki,
it is handy for buying drinks,
snacks
and other things for your hotel room.
We will introduce Waikiki Market in more detail in another article.
Dessert Time at ALOHA GREEK

After burgers and beer,
we obviously needed dessert.
We stopped at
ALOHA GREEK,
a Greek yogurt ice cream shop that had opened that year.
The fun part is that it is
self-serve and sold by weight.
You choose your cup,
dispense exactly as much as you want,
then pay according to the weight.
No giant portion required.
No food waste.
And most importantly...
you control the ice cream situation(笑)
We had also seen self-serve frozen yogurt shops in Los Angeles,
so it made me wonder whether this style was becoming popular again overseas.

When we visited,
samples were available,
so we could taste different flavors before deciding.
That was useful,
because choosing dessert is serious business.
The price at the time of our visit was
$1.35 per ounce.
The regular flavors included:
- Original Tart
- Lehua Honey
- Pineapple
- Mango
- Ube
There were also rotating flavors such as
Guava, Kona Coffee, Liliko'i and Lychee.
Very Hawaii.
Very dangerous if you are indecisive(笑)
Mamarin chose
Pineapple Yogurt
and
Mango Yogurt.

Because of the yogurt flavor,
the finish felt lighter and more refreshing than a rich ice cream.
For Mamarin in her 60s,
that was a very welcome feature(笑)
After a burger and fries,
a giant heavy dessert might have defeated us.
This was much easier.

There is also seating inside,
so you can sit down and enjoy your dessert.

The interior was cute too.
If you want a quick dessert without committing to an enormous serving,
the self-serve format is especially convenient.

Our Waikiki Cheap Eats Verdict: Burgers, Beer and Dessert Without the Shock

Eating in Waikiki can get expensive very quickly.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner... and suddenly your wallet has also gone on vacation.
That is why we enjoyed this combination.
At Piko Kitchen + Bar,
we found a happy hour where burgers and beer were $6 when we visited.
Then at ALOHA GREEK,
we could choose exactly how much yogurt ice cream we wanted
instead of buying a huge fixed portion.
Both are in a very convenient area of central Waikiki,
so they were easy to fit into a day of sightseeing.
For travelers in their 60s and 70s,
we also liked that we did not have to deal with enormous portions.
You can eat,
enjoy yourself,
and still have enough energy left to walk around Waikiki afterward.
Affordable by Waikiki standards, tasty, convenient — and we still had room for dessert.
That counts as a successful meal in my book(笑)
