We visited Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture to enjoy roses and the spectacular winter illumination.
Ashikaga Flower Park is famous throughout Japan for its seasonal flower displays and large-scale illumination event. The illuminated gardens feel almost like stepping into another world, and we have been impressed every time we visit.
In this guide, we share what we learned from our visit, including why arriving in the late afternoon worked so well and our favorite illumination and photo spots. We also include updated information for the 2026–2027 illumination season.

Ashikaga Flower Park Illumination 2026–2027: Dates, Hours and Admission
For the 2026–2027 season, Ashikaga Flower Park’s winter illumination “The Garden of Illuminated Flowers” is scheduled to run from October 17, 2026 to February 14, 2027.

Why We Recommend Arriving in the Late Afternoon
When we visited, we entered at around 3:30 p.m. This turned out to be a great time to arrive.
Many visitors come mainly for the nighttime illumination, so the park felt relatively quiet when we first entered on a weekday. Arriving before sunset gave us time to enjoy the flower gardens in daylight before the illumination began.
It also made taking photos easier because there were fewer people around.
Benefit 1: Enjoy Flowers Before the Lights Turn On
The rose season was nearing its end during our visit, but there were still many different varieties in bloom.
Because the park was quieter in the late afternoon, we could look around and take photos without feeling rushed.
It was fun to walk around and find our favorite roses. Ashikaga Flower Park also has many other seasonal flowers throughout the grounds.
Benefit 2: Take Photos of Flowers and Illuminations Together
Another advantage of arriving before dark is being able to photograph both flowers and illumination displays.
This was a photo with the amethyst sage.
As the sky became darker, we could capture the colorful pansies together with the lights. That transition from daylight to evening is one of the best parts of visiting in the late afternoon.
There was also a beautiful flower-filled water basin.
There are many cute photo spots throughout the park too.
For us, arriving before sunset felt like getting two experiences in one: flowers during the day and illumination after dark.
You Can Also Buy Flowers and Souvenirs
Ashikaga Flower Park has several souvenir shops, including one near the main gate that sells flowers and plants.
Mamarin, our editor-in-chief, bought a cyclamen during our visit. There were also some unusual cultivated varieties.
The shops also sold sweets, decorative items and other souvenirs.
The shopping areas became busier after the illumination crowds arrived, so buying souvenirs earlier can be convenient if you do not mind carrying them.
Best Illumination Spots at Ashikaga Flower Park
These were some of our favorite illumination areas from our visit.
Colorful Flower Field and Castle Illumination
This was our favorite illumination spot.
A colorful field of lights surrounded a glowing castle, creating an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.
You could also go inside the castle. The interior was covered with beautiful floral decorations, making it a popular photo spot.
The view from inside was just as beautiful as the view from outside.
Illuminated Wisteria Inspired by Ashikaga’s Famous Flowers
Ashikaga Flower Park is famous for its wisteria, so one illumination you should not miss is the wisteria-inspired light display.
Thousands of lights hang overhead like glowing wisteria flowers. Walking underneath them felt like entering another world.
During our visit, there was even a subtle wisteria-like fragrance around the display. It made the experience feel more immersive than simply looking at the lights.
Another beautiful photo spot was outside the main display, where the illuminated wisteria was reflected on the water.
Several photographers were taking pictures here. The reflection created a completely different atmosphere from standing underneath the lights, so it is worth viewing the display from both angles.
Christmas Illumination and Seasonal Decorations
If you visit around Christmas, you may also find seasonal Christmas illuminations and decorations.
We saw a glowing Christmas tree during our visit.
There was also a sleigh-style photo spot.
At some photo areas, staff may also be available to help take pictures.
We also saw a real Christmas tree in addition to the illuminated displays.
Seasonal decorations may change each year.
Warm Up at a Cafe or Restaurant
There are places inside the park where you can sit down for drinks, light meals or a proper meal.
During our visit, we stopped near Cafe Marronnier. There is also a larger restaurant inside the park.
Taking a cafe break can be especially useful if you arrive before sunset. After enjoying the flowers, you can warm up indoors while waiting for the illumination to become fully visible.
Is Ashikaga Flower Park Comfortable for Travelers Over 60?
We found Ashikaga Flower Park easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace.
Much of the park is relatively flat, and there are benches where you can stop and rest. The major illumination areas are also fairly close together, so you do not necessarily need to walk long distances to see many of the highlights.
For us, arriving in the late afternoon was particularly comfortable. We could enjoy the flowers first, take photos while the park was quieter, and then watch the gardens transform as the lights came on.
Winter nights in Tochigi can become very cold, so warm clothing is essential. If cold weather is difficult for you, visiting earlier in the illumination season may feel more comfortable than the coldest part of winter.

By train
The easiest station is JR Ryomo Line Ashikaga Flower Park Station.
The park is approximately 3 minutes on foot from the station. This makes the park convenient even for visitors traveling without a car.
By car
Parking is available, but the surrounding roads can become crowded during major flower and illumination seasons.
If possible, weekdays are generally easier than busy weekends and holidays.

Is Ashikaga Flower Park Illumination Worth Visiting?
For us, yes.
The combination of seasonal flowers, large-scale illumination, wisteria-inspired lights, castle displays and photo spots makes Ashikaga Flower Park much more than a simple light-up event.
If you can, we especially recommend arriving before sunset. You can enjoy the flowers in daylight, watch the lights gradually appear, and experience two very different sides of the park in one visit.
For travelers who enjoy gardens, photography, seasonal scenery or relaxed sightseeing, Ashikaga Flower Park is an easy place to spend a beautiful afternoon and evening.
