Okinawa Bus Tour Review: Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island & More Without a Car

2023年2月7日

Okinawa sightseeing bus tour to Churaumi Aquarium

On a previous trip to Okinawa,

we rented a car.

This time, however,

neither my daughter nor I felt very confident about driving,

so we decided to join a

sightseeing bus tour.

We booked a

VELTRA day tour visiting Churaumi Aquarium and other popular attractions in northern Okinawa.

The tour visits

Manzamo,

Nago Pineapple Park,

Okashigoten,

Kouri Island,

and Churaumi Aquarium

all in one day.

In the end, we were very glad we chose the bus tour.

Without having to drive,

we were able to visit several popular sights in northern Okinawa efficiently.

The current main itinerary is:

① Manzamo: about 25 minutes

② Nago Pineapple Park: about 50 minutes

③ Okashigoten Nago: about 30 minutes

④ Kouri Island: about 30 minutes

⑤ Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: about 150 minutes

※The order of stops, sightseeing times, and prices may change.

For Churaumi Aquarium,

you can currently choose between

a tour with an aquarium admission ticket and a tour without one.

The tour also currently offers

multilingual audio guidance in English, Chinese, and Korean.

For travelers who do not want to rent a car,

or for those traveling in their 60s and beyond,

we found this to be a very convenient way to explore Okinawa.

A Convenient Way to Explore Northern Okinawa Without a Rental Car

The biggest advantage of this bus tour

was being able to

visit several popular attractions without having to drive.

Sightseeing spots in Okinawa can be quite far apart,

so driving a rental car for a full day

can be more tiring than expected.

On a bus tour,

you can sit back and rest while traveling between destinations,

and you do not have to worry about parking.

For travelers in their 60s, being able to save energy during the journey was a big advantage for us.

First Stop: Manzamo|A Famous Okinawa Scenic Spot

Elephant-shaped cliff at Manzamo in Okinawa

Our first sightseeing stop was

Manzamo.

Manzamo is one of the best-known scenic spots in Onna Village.

It is famous for its dramatic Ryukyu limestone cliffs,

including the rock formation that looks like

an elephant’s trunk.

The surrounding ocean and grassland

create a very Okinawan landscape.

Currently,

there is an admission fee of

¥100 per person

to enter the Manzamo walking area.

※Children below elementary-school age are free.

There is also now a modern visitor facility

near the entrance,

with souvenir shops,

restaurants,

and viewing areas.

When we visited,

there were souvenirs such as Orion Beer T-shirts.

Some items even seemed less expensive than at the airport,

so

the souvenir shops at Manzamo may be worth checking.

Just remember that sightseeing time is limited on a bus tour,

so it is best not to spend too long shopping.

Nago Pineapple Park|The Cart Is a Convenient Option for Travelers Over 60

Nago Pineapple Park in Okinawa

Next,

we visited

Nago Pineapple Park.

This popular attraction in northern Okinawa

features pineapple fields,

tropical plants,

food,

souvenirs,

and photo spots.

The current standard admission fee is

¥1,500 for adults age 16 and over

and

¥800 for children age 4 to 15.

For this VELTRA bus tour,

admission to Nago Pineapple Park is included in the tour price.

However,

the automated sightseeing cart,

known as the

“Pineapple Train” or “Pineapple-go”,

is charged separately.

The current tour information lists it at

¥500 per person.

For travelers in their 60s, I think using the cart is a very convenient option.

You will also do quite a lot of walking later at Churaumi Aquarium,

so it can be a good idea

to save some energy early in the day.

Sightseeing cart at Nago Pineapple Park

The cart made getting around very easy♪

You can relax while looking at the tropical plants and scenery.

Small pineapples growing at Nago Pineapple Park

We even spotted tiny pineapples!

It was interesting to see how pineapples grow

before they become the large fruit we usually see in stores.

Lots of Fun Photo Spots

Photo spot at Nago Pineapple Park

Nago Pineapple Park has many colorful places for taking photos.

Tropical photo spot at Nago Pineapple Park

There are plenty of bright,

tropical-looking spots throughout the park.

Colorful photo spot at Nago Pineapple Park

Some are especially colorful and playful♪

Taking photos at Nago Pineapple Park

Our editor-in-chief Mamarin took lots of photos too (*´ω`*)

However,

the current bus tour gives you

about 50 minutes at Nago Pineapple Park.

If you spend too much time taking photos,

you may have less time for shopping or food,

so keeping an eye on the time is important.

Pineapple Sweets and Snacks Are Also Worth Trying

Chilled pineapple at Nago Pineapple Park

When we visited,

we tried chilled pineapple♪

It had a nice balance of sweetness and acidity

and was very refreshing.

※The product and price shown in the photo were from the time of our visit.

Today,

the park still offers

pineapple sweets,

drinks,

pizza,

and Okinawan food.

There Are Many Souvenir Shops, So Watch the Time

Souvenir shop at Nago Pineapple Park

There were more souvenir shops than we expected.

You can find

pineapple sweets,

local Okinawan gifts,

and many other items.

However,

free time is limited on a bus tour.

We looked around a little too slowly

and ended up rushing back to the parking area before the meeting time(笑)

If you want to enjoy photos, food, and shopping, it is best to plan your time from the beginning.

Why We Recommend an Okinawa Bus Tour for Travelers Over 60

After joining the tour ourselves,

the biggest benefit we noticed was

how easy the transportation felt.

Driving around northern Okinawa

can involve long distances.

With a bus tour,

you can sit and rest between attractions,

then get off feeling more refreshed for the next stop.

It is also convenient

to be able to visit several major attractions in one day.

For travelers in their 60s who want to explore Okinawa without driving, this is an option I would recommend.

On the other hand,

each sightseeing stop has a fixed amount of time.

If you prefer to spend several hours at one destination

or travel entirely at your own pace,

a rental car may suit you better.

If you value easy transportation, choose a bus tour.

If you value flexibility, a rental car may be better.

The best choice depends on your travel style.
