The Strings Omotesando Afternoon Tea: Smoke, Live Mont Blanc & 3 Hours of Surprises

2026年10月27日

Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea at TIME NEST BAR LOUNGE, The Strings Omotesando

A sophisticated new afternoon tea experience with live theatrical presentations has arrived at TIME NEST BAR LOUNGE on the basement floor of The Strings Omotesando in Tokyo.

The weekday-only Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea launched in October 2026.

Think mysterious smoke inspired by the New York skyline, a freshly piped Mont Blanc parfait finished right in front of you, and one surprise after another during a leisurely three-hour afternoon tea experience.

This time, Megumi from the Kanreki Travel editorial team and our editor-in-chief Mamarin, who is in her 60s, experienced it together.

“We’ve never seen an afternoon tea presentation like this before!”

The sweets and savouries were delicious, of course, but what made this afternoon tea so memorable was that the sense of excitement continued right until the end.

Here is our firsthand experience, including the menu, prices and the moments that impressed us most.

What Is The Strings Omotesando?

The Strings Omotesando in Tokyo

The Strings Omotesando is a complex directly connected to Exit B5 of Omotesando Station, with wedding facilities, restaurants, cafés and a bar lounge.

Its interiors are inspired by sophisticated New York style, and Cafe & Dining ZelkovA, facing Omotesando’s famous tree-lined avenue, is also popular.

One of the biggest advantages is the direct connection to Omotesando Station.

It is easy to reach even on a rainy day without getting wet, which is always nice when you are dressed for afternoon tea.

This time, we visited TIME NEST BAR LOUNGE on the basement floor.

Its daytime Grand Salon service began in October 2026, bringing this theatrical afternoon tea experience to the space. The lounge is currently open for daytime service on weekdays.

A Luxurious Hideaway Underground: TIME NEST BAR LOUNGE

Once we stepped down to the basement floor, the atmosphere felt completely different from upstairs.

Stone walls, warm wooden interiors and striking ring-shaped chandeliers created a sophisticated, luxurious mood.

The generously spaced sofas were wonderfully soft and comfortable.

It felt glamorous without being noisy — almost like a hidden lounge for adults where you could forget the rush of Tokyo for a while.

Simply spending time in this space felt like a luxury.

What Is the Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea?

The Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea turns your table into a stage.

Inspired by Broadway theatre, the service staff become the “cast,” presenting each part of the experience almost like scenes in a performance.

There is a prologue, Act One, Act Two and finally the finale.

So instead of simply eating sweets and savouries, the experience itself becomes part of the afternoon tea.

And there is no need to rush.

You have a full three hours, with 19 free-flow drink options to enjoy along the way.

Prologue: A Sparkling Non-Alcoholic Toast

Non-alcoholic sparkling welcome drink at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

The experience begins with a sparkling welcome drink.

Our first glass was a non-alcoholic sparkling drink served in a Champagne glass.

According to the staff, it is made using a process designed not to generate alcohol during production, rather than producing alcohol first and removing it afterwards.

It still gives you that festive feeling of making a toast, even if you do not drink alcohol.

There were two non-alcoholic sparkling options to choose from.

Act One: Afternoon Tea Begins in a Cloud of Smoke

Then the real show began.

A mysterious white mist spread across the table, inspired by fog drifting around New York’s skyscrapers.

Beautiful sweets and savouries appeared on a stand decorated with a New York nightscape while smoke flowed around it.

“We’ve never seen an afternoon tea start like this before!”

It was not only delicious — it was fun to watch.

Four Luxurious Savouries — Including Incredibly Tender Wagyu Roast Beef

Four savouries at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

Four savouries featuring luxurious ingredients were arranged on the upper tier.

Savoury Menu

  • Croissant Sandwich, Croque Monsieur Style, with Truffle White Sauce, Gruyère Cheese and Asakusa Bacon
  • Marinated Snow Crab with Avocado Cream, Caviar and Yuzu
  • Mozzarella di Bufala Bocconcini with Seasonal Fruit and Basil
  • Wagyu Round Roast Beef with Whole-Grain Mustard Gravy

When Mamarin tried the Wagyu roast beef, her reaction was immediate.

This may be the softest roast beef I’ve ever eaten! It’s almost tender enough to drink!

That tells you quite a lot about how soft it was.

The marinated snow crab was also luxurious, with plenty of crab flavour balanced by avocado cream, caviar and yuzu.

The seasonal fruit paired with mozzarella was Shine Muscat when we visited.

The sweet, juicy grapes with mozzarella made for a fresh and surprisingly delicious combination.

The Large Croissant Sandwich Was Surprisingly Filling

The croissant sandwich was another favourite.

Unlike the tiny finger sandwiches often served at afternoon tea, this one used a generously sized croissant.

The crisp, buttery croissant worked beautifully with salty Asakusa bacon, rich truffle white sauce and Gruyère cheese.

It was far more filling than I expected from an afternoon tea savoury.

If you prefer afternoon teas with a good balance of savoury food rather than endless sweets, this was especially satisfying.

Add Fresh Truffle to Your French Fries for ¥500

The afternoon tea also includes truffle-flavoured French fries.

For an additional ¥500, you can have fresh truffle shaved over the fries right in front of you.

A member of staff uses a truffle slicer at the table, covering the fries with delicate slices.

Watching the truffle fall over the fries somehow made ordinary French fries feel considerably less ordinary.

The fries were thin, crisp and dangerously easy to keep eating.

That salty bite tasted even better between sweet desserts.

Once we started, it was difficult to stop.

Four Autumn Sweets — Sweet, But Not Too Sweet

Four autumn sweets at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

Four seasonal sweets featuring autumn flavours such as chestnut and pear were served on the stand.

Sweets Menu

  • Amber Caramel Mousse Tart
  • Baked Chestnut and Cassis Mont Blanc
  • Pear Tart
  • Pear and Earl Grey Jelly with Panna Cotta

One thing we especially liked was that the sweets were not overwhelmingly sweet.

Some glass desserts at afternoon tea can become quite rich, but the Pear and Earl Grey Jelly with Panna Cotta tasted light enough that I finished it easily.

Because the sweetness was restrained, it was also easier to enjoy several different desserts without feeling tired of them.

Mamarin agreed.

I really like that they’re not too sweet!

Chestnut and Cassis Mont Blanc — A Combination That Surprised Us

Baked chestnut and cassis Mont Blanc

At first, chestnut and cassis sounded like a slightly unusual combination to me.

Then I tasted it.

The mellow richness of the chestnut worked surprisingly well with the bright acidity of the cassis.

“Chestnut and cassis go this well together?”

That was my genuine reaction.

The acidity also kept the sweetness from becoming too heavy, which made it easier to continue enjoying the rest of the desserts.

Pear Tart with a Generous Japanese Chestnut

The pear tart was topped with juicy pieces of pear and a large Japanese chestnut.

It combined the freshness of pear with the unmistakably autumnal flavour of chestnut.

Even visually, it felt perfectly suited to an autumn afternoon tea.

Act Two: The Special Dessert Is Finished Right in Front of You

Special dessert trolley at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

One of the biggest highlights arrived next: the special dessert.

The moment the trolley appeared, it already felt like an event.

I actually found myself saying, “Wow!”

There are two special dessert options:

Special Desserts

  • Freshly Piped Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc Parfait
  • Premium Seasonal Fruit Shortcake — available with the ¥300 upgrade plan

Freshly Piped Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc Parfait

The Freshly Piped Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc Parfait immediately caught our attention.

Staff finish it right in front of you, piping fine strands of Japanese chestnut cream onto the dessert.

Watching it being made is part of the fun.

Then we noticed something else.

It was huge.

Afternoon tea desserts are often tiny, elegant bites.

This one had serious presence.

And the chestnut was not limited to the beautifully piped topping.

There were chunky pieces of chestnut inside too.

If you want to fully embrace chestnut season in Japan, this is the one I would choose.

It was impressive to look at and deeply satisfying to eat.

Upgrade for ¥300: Shine Muscat Premium Shortcake

Premium shortcake being sliced tableside

The upgrade plan lets you choose the Premium Seasonal Fruit Shortcake instead.

During our visit, the cake featured Shine Muscat grapes.

This dessert is also finished in front of you, with the cake sliced tableside.

Beautiful Shine Muscat grapes were arranged inside the cake as well.

The juicy grapes, light cream and fluffy sponge created an elegant combination.

If you prefer fresh fruit and a lighter cream cake, this option was equally tempting.

Mont Blanc or Shortcake — Which Would We Choose?

For a full celebration of autumn chestnuts, choose the Freshly Piped Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc Parfait.

If you prefer juicy fruit and light cream, the Shine Muscat Premium Shortcake is a lovely alternative.

Both feel special, so this one really comes down to personal preference.

19 Free-Flow Drinks and a Full Three Hours to Enjoy Them

The Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea lasts a generous three hours.

During that time, you can enjoy 19 different free-flow drinks, including tea, coffee and tea mocktails.

What impressed us was that the drinks did not feel like an afterthought.

There was real attention to the tea leaves, coffee beans and brewing methods.

For Tea Lovers: amsu tea Selection

amsu tea selection at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

The tea selection comes from amsu tea, using leaves selected to pair well with Japanese water.

The menu includes Uva, Darjeeling and Keemun, traditionally known among Japan’s “three great teas of the world.”

The tea is also prepared with attention to brewing temperature.

I tried the Darjeeling Second Flush, which was clean and smooth without an unpleasant bitterness.

I could easily have kept drinking cup after cup.

It was also a lovely match for the sweets.

I also tried Keemun, a Chinese black tea.

Its elegant aroma reminded me a little of Oriental Beauty tea, and I enjoyed it very much.

Trying several teas and comparing their aromas and flavours is part of the fun.

Freshly Ground Coffee Brewed for Exactly Four Minutes

French press coffee at TIME NEST BAR LOUNGE

Coffee lovers should not ignore the premium coffee.

I ordered the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe G1.

The beans are ground after you order and then carefully brewed in a French press.

According to the staff, the brewing time is exactly four minutes.

Not three.

Not five.

Four.

They explained that this timing brings out the character of the beans most effectively.

As I drank it, I noticed slightly different flavours between the first sip and the next, which made the coffee interesting in its own right.

It was especially good with the freshly piped Mont Blanc parfait.

The rich chestnut flavour and the coffee worked beautifully together.

If you love coffee, this is one drink I would definitely try.

Colourful Tea Mocktails for Something Refreshing

Orange Fruit Garden Tea Sangria mocktail

You are not limited to hot tea and coffee.

There are also cold tea mocktails.

The non-alcoholic selection included:

  • Sparkling Grape Juice
  • Orange Fruit Garden Tea Sangria
  • Bergamot Peach Tea Soda

I chose the Orange Fruit Garden Tea Sangria.

Its bright red colour and fruit garnish made it especially photogenic.

It also tasted good.

And after three hours of talking, we had started to feel a little warm, so the cold tea mocktail arrived at exactly the right moment.

Sometimes afternoon tea requires a beverage intermission.

The Drinks Were Almost as Memorable as the Desserts

One thing that really impressed us was the care put into each drink.

The tea was brewed to suit the individual leaves, while the coffee preparation was designed to bring out the flavour of the beans.

You could taste that extra attention.

The sweets and savouries may be the obvious stars of an afternoon tea, but here the drinks deserved plenty of attention too.

And with three hours available, there is enough time to actually enjoy several of them.

Finale: Choose Your Favourites from the Dessert Trolley

Dessert trolley finale at Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea

By this point, we had eaten sweets, savouries and a special dessert.

Surely we were finished.

Apparently not.

Another trolley appeared.

The finale was a beautiful dessert trolley filled with colourful petits fours and fresh fruit.

Staff serving desserts from the dessert trolley

There were chocolates, madeleines, financiers, crème brûlée and other small sweets, along with fresh seasonal fruit.

Staff brought the trolley directly to our table, and we could choose whichever desserts we wanted.

Petits fours and sweets on the dessert trolley

There were enough choices that even deciding what to take was fun.

You could choose petits fours if you still wanted something sweet, or fresh fruit for a lighter finish.

By this point, we were both smiling and saying,

“This is happiness!”

And just when we thought that really was the end...

there was one more surprise.

I am not going to spoil it.

You will have to experience that part of the Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea for yourself.

A Memorable Three Hours for Mothers, Daughters and Special Occasions

Mother and daughter enjoying Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea in Tokyo

What made the Salon de Theatre Afternoon Tea special was not only the quality of the sweets and savouries.

The theatrical presentation unfolding around us was a major part of the experience.

From the mysterious smoke at the beginning to the tableside special dessert and the colourful dessert trolley at the end, there was always something new to look forward to during the three hours.

Mamarin, in her 60s, thoroughly enjoyed both the presentation and the food.

Another thing we really appreciated was the generous three-hour seating.

Many afternoon teas allow around two hours, which can sometimes feel surprisingly quick.

Here, we did not need to rush.

We could refill our tea and coffee, talk, eat slowly and simply enjoy being together.

When everyday life is busy, having three hours where you can forget the clock and enjoy beautiful food with someone important feels genuinely luxurious.

It would be a lovely choice for birthdays, milestone celebrations, anniversaries or a long-awaited afternoon with friends.

I also think it would be wonderful for mothers and daughters who live apart and want somewhere special to sit, talk and catch up properly.

“A normal afternoon tea isn’t exciting enough.”

“I want to spend memorable time with someone important.”

If either of those sounds familiar, this is an afternoon tea worth knowing about.
