Manchinro Yokohama Chinatown Review: Cantonese Dinner & Peking Duck

2023年4月9日

Visiting Yokohama Chinatown on a short trip

We took a short one-night trip to Yokohama.

Although Yokohama is easy to reach from Tokyo, staying overnight made the trip feel like a refreshing little getaway.

This time, we had dinner at Manchinro Honten, a long-established Cantonese restaurant in Yokohama Chinatown.

In this article, we share the full course we enjoyed during our visit in 2023, along with updated restaurant information.

Please note: The dishes and prices shown in this article are based on our 2023 visit.

Current course menus and prices have changed, so check the official website for the latest information before visiting.

Dining at Manchinro in Yokohama Chinatown

Unfortunately, it was raining heavily on the day we visited.

The weather felt almost like a typhoon, so Yokohama Chinatown was much quieter than usual.

We had seen many positive reviews of Manchinro, so we made a reservation in advance.

Manchinro was founded in 1892 and is one of the long-established restaurants in Yokohama Chinatown.

Today, it continues to serve Cantonese cuisine and emphasizes the natural flavors of its ingredients.

During our visit in 2023, several course options were available.

We chose the ¥8,000 course.

The current menu and pricing are different, so the meal below should be viewed as a record of our 2023 experience.

Our ¥8,000 Course Dinner in 2023

Everything we tried was delicious.

For us, the portion size was just right, and we were able to enjoy the meal comfortably until the end.

Travelers with a larger appetite may want to add an à la carte dish depending on the course.

We started with an appetizer platter featuring several small dishes.

It was a nice way to enjoy a variety of flavors at the beginning of the meal.

Braised Shark Fin with Jinhua Ham

Next came braised shark fin with Jinhua ham.

Shark fin is one of the dishes many people associate with a special Chinese dinner in Yokohama Chinatown.

The soup portion was generous and satisfying.

Prawn and Squid Dish

This dish featured large prawns and squid prepared in two styles.

The squid we had was very tender and easy to eat.

The prawns were served with a pleasantly tangy sauce that paired very well with them.

Stir-Fried Pork and Broccoli

Next was stir-fried pork and broccoli.

The pork was soft and easy to eat.

It also did not feel too heavy or greasy, which made it easy to enjoy as part of a multi-course dinner.

Steamed White Fish with XO Sauce

This was steamed white fish with XO sauce.

We especially liked the combination of the delicate white fish and rice noodles.

Roast Peking Duck

Then came roast Peking duck.

It is always exciting when Peking duck appears during a Chinese course meal.

We enjoyed it with a soft, chewy wrapper.

By this point, we were already feeling quite full.

Duck Fried Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf

The final savory dish was duck fried rice wrapped in lotus leaf.

We had been slightly worried that a large serving of fried rice at the end might be too much, but the portion was just right.

The lotus leaf gave the rice a pleasant aroma, and the dish felt relatively light.

Two Desserts: Almond Tofu and Mango Pudding

Dessert included two different items:

almond tofu and mango pudding topped with caramelized sugar.

We love both desserts, so getting to enjoy them together was a very nice ending to the meal.

The Entrance and Interior Are Also Impressive

Decorative entrance at Manchinro Yokohama Chinatown

The entrance was just as impressive as the food.

There was a large decorative display that reminded us a little of a Nebuta festival float.

It immediately made us want to take photos.

When we tried photographing someone in front of it, the strong backlighting made the person appear dark, so the decoration itself photographed better on its own.

Elegant Chinese-style interior at Manchinro Yokohama Chinatown

The Chinese-inspired interior was also beautiful.

The atmosphere felt elegant and substantial, making it a pleasant place to enjoy a slower dinner.
