During our trip to Beppu in Oita,
we stayed one night at
Galleria Midobaru.
Located on a hillside above Beppu,
the hotel offers
private in-room onsen baths in every guest room
and a distinctive atmosphere filled with art and design.
The stylish interior almost made us feel
as if we were staying at a design hotel overseas rather than in Japan.
Galleria Midobaru also received a
Good Design Award in 2021.
During our stay,
the atmosphere felt quiet and sophisticated,
making it a great choice for travelers looking for
a relaxing and special hotel stay in Beppu.

Art-Filled Entrance and Bar Lounge

Artworks are displayed throughout the hotel,
and optional tours are available for guests who want to explore the pieces in more detail.
The high ceilings and contemporary design
give the entrance an atmosphere almost like a modern art museum.

Even the hallway leading to the guest rooms
feels carefully designed.
The interior uses warm brown tones,
creating a calm and stylish atmosphere.

At moments,
it hardly felt like we were in Beppu.

The bar lounge also has a sophisticated design
with artwork displayed throughout the space.
Guests can enjoy alcoholic drinks,
non-alcoholic options,
and welcome drinks here.

The menu includes
non-alcoholic drinks,
beverages made with
kabosu citrus, a specialty of Oita,
and local sake from Oita.

This moon-like light installation at the entrance
looked especially beautiful after dark,
so I had to take a photo.
Guest Room and Private In-Room Onsen

Next,
let’s take a look at the guest room.
Our room had a warm wood-toned interior.
This room had a double bed,
although twin-bed rooms are also available.
The double bed felt spacious and comfortable.

The room had a very simple,
minimalist design
with very little left out on display.
From the room,
we could see
Beppu Bay.
Because the hotel is located on higher ground,
the view was beautiful.

Most amenities were neatly stored away
rather than left out in the open.

People who like clean,
minimalist interiors will probably enjoy this style.
At first,
I did find myself opening several drawers
to figure out where everything was(笑).

And this is the
private in-room onsen bath.
The water felt quite hot,
so I added a little cold water
before getting in.
There was plenty of steam,
and the bath felt wonderfully relaxing.
Being able to soak privately
while enjoying the view
was one of the highlights of the stay.

The balcony was also spacious.
After the bath,
I sat outside for a while
and enjoyed the scenery.

You can even see
the famous steam rising across Beppu
from the hotel.
It is a wonderful place
for travelers who want to spend time quietly
and enjoy a slower pace.

Creative Italian Dinner with Oita Ingredients

For dinner,
we ate at the hotel restaurant
THE PEAK.
The course featured
creative Italian dishes made with ingredients from Oita.

Our dinner consisted of
five courses.
During our stay,
the restaurant was also able to accommodate dietary needs,
including allergy-related requests.
The special bread served for the allergy-friendly meal
was so delicious
that even I kept eating it despite not having any allergies(笑).

The ingredients tasted fresh,
and the food was genuinely delicious.
Oita has so many excellent restaurants
and local ingredients.

One of the dishes was
oil pasta with crab and green onion.
I love shrimp and crab,
so I was very happy with this dish.

For the main meat dish,
guests could choose the portion size.
Larger portions were also available.

Dessert included
a chocolate macaron,
which was also delicious.
The staff were friendly and attentive,
and the service felt very comfortable throughout the meal.
Breakfast with a Choice of Main Dish and Buffet

For breakfast,
we selected one main dish
and then enjoyed salads,
bread,
and other items from the buffet.

At the time of our stay,
the main dish choices included items such as:
- Plain omelet
- Spanish omelet
- Open sandwich
- Yabakei Kinumochi pork steak
- Pot-au-feu-style soup
- Oita vegetable natural curry (vegan)
- Homemade pancakes
I chose the
pot-au-feu-style soup.
Many of the dishes used ingredients from Oita,
including local vegetables
and chicken sausage.

The buffet also offered drinks,
including
kabosu juice.
The tomato smoothie seemed especially popular
and was almost gone when we arrived.

I chose salad
and an egg tart from the buffet.
Because I had selected the pot-au-feu-style soup as my main,
the breakfast included plenty of vegetables
and felt light but satisfying.
The egg tart was also delicious.

Galleria Midobaru Is Ideal for a Quiet and Stylish Stay in Beppu
Galleria Midobaru,
located on a hillside above Beppu,
felt almost like
staying inside a contemporary art museum.
The private onsen bath in our room
made it easy to relax whenever we wanted,
while enjoying views of Beppu and the rising hot spring steam.
The creative Italian dinner
showcased local ingredients beautifully,
and the breakfast with a choice of main dish plus buffet
was also very satisfying.
For us,
the hotel felt especially well suited to travelers who prefer
a quiet, design-focused atmosphere
rather than a busy resort environment.
It is a good choice for couples,
friends,
or mature travelers
who want to enjoy Beppu at a slower pace.
If you value art, private onsen, scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere, Galleria Midobaru is a memorable place to stay.
